Himeji City Museum of Art was opened in 1983 as a sanctuary of beauty where aesthetic culture could be cultivated and local artists could be fostered.
Since its opening the museum has been appealing to the public for its accessibility and as a place of fellowship and relaxation. The museum strives to provide the public with many opportunities of viewing its permanent collection as well as its special exhibition to both foreign and native artists' works. The museum offers amateur artists gallery space where their art works may be introduces to the public.
The collection of the museum is extended to include Japanese paintings,
oil paintings, water paintings, sketches, prints, sculptures, ceramics
(Tozan-yaki), and Japanese swords. In spite of a local museum, there are
other world famous works, for example, sculptures of Rodin and Antoine
Bourdelle, some paintings of Paul Delvaux, a master of surrealism.
