About Himeji City

History

Himeji City has a long history dating back to the age of the gods. In the location currently known as Himeji, where it is said people have lived from the Jomon Era approximately 10,000 years ago, there is a magnificent history dating from ancient times. This location became the center of Harima after the provincial office of Harima country was established following the Reformation of Taika (7th century), and after Kokubunji Temple was established by order of the Emperor Syomu around the middle of the 8th century. It was during this same era when Hiromine Shrine and Engyoji Temple on Mt. Shosha, which remains exist to this day, were established. Furthermore, in the Muromachi Era, Mr. Akamatsu, a member of the local ruling family in Harima, built a bastion on Himeyama Mountain. Later, Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the tenshukaku (castle tower) of Himeji Castle, and finally, Ikeda Terumasa came to Himeji and completed the castle which is famous to this day. Not only is Himeji Castle a world heritage site but it also has a rich heritage included in the many temples and shrines which tell us about the long history of Himeji City.
