Do not leave the site until the police arrive.

If you call 110 to report a traffic accident or crime in which you are involved or have witnessed, do not leave the site until the police arrive. It may be necessary for the police to ask you questions as a witness. Furthermore, do not touch anything at the scene except what is necessary for emergency treatment of any injuries. In case of burglary also, do not touch anything at the scene. If you find that your bankbook or cash card has been stolen, contact your bank or financial institution to deactivate them.

If you need emergency help

To call an ambulance in case of injury or illness

The Fire Department has firefighting and emergency ambulance services, and is on call 24 hours a day. Dial 119 (Fire Department).
hen your call is answered, say, "Kyukyu desu (This is an emergency)," stay calm and clearly explain your situation to the operator. If you do not speak Japanese, ask for help from someone near you, or have someone who can speak Japanese talk to the operator for you. Emergency calls can be made for free from public phones. If the line is busy, stay calm and try again.

It would be useful to write your name, address and the name of the nearest landmarks on a paper in hiragana or Roman alphabet and keep it in a noticeable place around your telephone machine.

When to call ambulance service:

  • injury due to natural disaster or traffic accident,
  • burns, gas poisoning or other serious conditions that need immediate medical care, or
  • need for immediate hospitalization.

Cases for which ambulance service is NOT available include:

  • mild illness or injury,
  • illness or injury that is not severe, for which a personal car or taxi can be used,
  • treatment of a deeply intoxicated person who is not injured or in dangerous condition,
  • birth pangs, or
  • transportation of a deceased person.

In case of fire / Gas leak

In case of fire

If the flame seems too intense to extinguish by yourself, yell, "Kajida!" (Fire!) to let others know that there is a fire. Next, call 119 (Fire Department), then try to control the fire using a fire extinguisher if possible. If there is a lot of smoke, cover your nose and mouth with a wet towel, stay low to the floor to avoid smoke and poisonous gases, and escape from the fire quickly. Should you find a fire, call 119 to report it no matter how small it is.
