Marriage

Notification of marriage:
Marriage becomes legally effective as of the date notification of marriage is received.

Necessary documentation:
Marriage notification form (should be signed by two witnesses who are 20 years of age or older), documents certifying that the marriage is not against the laws and regulations of the applicants' home country/ies, and Japanese translations of the documents. Certificates on Registered Matters, documents certifying nationality (passport etc.)

When non-Japanese citizens file a notification of marriage, several additional documents are required; the necessary documents vary, depending on the nationality. Contact the Citizen's Section of City Hall in advance, for details.

Birth

Notification of birth:
within 14 days after birth

Necessary documentation:
birth notification form, birth certificate issued by a doctor (printed on the right half of the notification form), Maternal and Child Health Handbook, National Health Insurance Certificate (if enrolled)

Divorce

In Japan, there are three types of divorce proceedings: by both parties' consent, through family court arbitration, and by court decision. In either case, if the divorcing couple have children, to complete the divorce procedure it is necessary to determine which party has child custody.

Death of a family member

Notification of death:
within 7 days after learning of the death

Necessary documentation:
death notification form, death certificate issued by a doctor (printed on the right half of the notification form), Alien Registration Card and National Health Insurance Certificate (if enrolled) of the deceased person

<Cremation permit>
To obtain a cremation permit, submit a request for a cremation permit when filing the notification of death at City Hall's Citizen's Section, regional City offices, City Hall branches, Ekimae Shiyakusho (City Hall's service center near Himeji Sta.), sub-branches or service centers. Nagoyama Saijo (cemetery) offers cremation service free of charge and transportation by hearse for 8,000 yen.
