The Dimensions of Himeji Castle

The dimensions of Himeji Castle are featured on this site.
The following are three reasons why Himeji Castle is considered to be one of the best castles in Japan.

The Ingenious and Complex Nawabari Spiral

Nawabari (design, structure and mechanism), which consists of three important elements, decides the quality of functionality of a castle as a fortress. Himeji Castle has the ingenious and complex Nawabari design of a three-layered spiral defensive system.

Only Edo Castle in Tokyo and Himeji Castle have this design.

The Beautiful Renritsu-shiki Main Keep

The harmony of various elements completes the spectacular beauty of this structure: the 5-story main keep with 7 floors including a basement, the three small keeps connected to the main keep with roofed passages, multilayered roofs, Chidori-hafu (dormer gable), Kara-hafu (undulating gable) and appearance entirely covered with white plaster.

“The Castle Never Involved in Wars and Fires” Which Reminds Us of the Old Days

Miraculously Himeji Castle was never involved in wars in its 400-year history and even escaped war damage in WWll. Consequently, almost all the unique structures such as the keeps, turrets and gates are perfectly preserved in their original state, so Himeji Castle is an extremely valuable cultural heritage.
